about

ELECTRIC BARBARIAN

Electric Barbarian is the band that Floris Vermeulen initiated in 2000. For a decade they perform their unique mix of high speed live drum’n bass and jazz improvisation.

The band performed in venues all over Europe a.o.: Cité de la Musique (Paris), Banlieues Bleues (Paris), Lowlands (Biddinghuizen), Auditorium (Rome), Cankarjev Dom (Ljubljana), Paradiso (Amsterdam), Vooruit (Gent), Grand Theatre (Groningen), Taktlos.07 (Zurich) and Jazz Saalfelden (Austria). Electric Barbarian worked with guest musicians and performers such as Eric Boeren, Serge Adam, Andy Laster, Grazzhoppa, Kain and Tony Buck.

In 2004 Electric Barbarian produced their first album:
Quote: “….Él is masterfully and open produced and builds a monumental bridge between improvised music, hiphop and live drum-n-bass.”

The Brazilian poet Luanda Casella performs as a special guest with Electric Barbarian. Luanda Casella is a performer, a writer and most of all a story teller. She uses both rhythm and tonality of words to create a sound atmosphere. Her poems are reflecting every day thoughts and situations in an abstract way. She is a virtuoso in the performance of 'spoken word' with an astonishing flow.

After the sold out show in Paris at Cité de la Musique, Electric Barbarian premiered their new project ‘The Ghost of Langston Hughes’ at the World Expo Shanghai 2010. The performances where held at the Dutch Culture Center, housed in the renovated factory complex ‘800show’ which spans an area of 1400 m². Also the band was presented at the Idutang (Sz) and TuTu (Gz) in June 2010. At the ‘Fête de la Musique’ and the two concerts at the Dutch Cultural Center, Shanghai had his first encounter with Electric Barbarian, whose unique mix of high speed live drum’n bass and jazz improvisation caused a vibrant atmosphere and great enthusiasm among the spectators. Inspired by this performance, Electric Barbarian decided to come back.

The Ghost of Langston Hughes
'Groningen bassist Floris Vermeulen offered an exceptional project, The Ghost of Langston Hughes. For this purpose he extended his band Electric Barbarian with the Kaas String Quartet. While two DJs threw militant text fragments by Afro-American poet Langston Hughes at the audience, the strings took care of scratches and beats by making smears and pizzicati. The quartet did play a written score, but could introduce this at their own initiative. Trumpet player Bart Maris built scintillating intermediate layers by using effects. Thus jazz, hiphop and classical music melted into an impressive monument for Hughes.'

Unsigned release @ Paradiso (Amsterdam)
'If they manage to make the big time, they owe it to their stamina. And to the art of permanently reinventing themselves. The new line-up with the flexible, fire-spitting vocalist Luanda Cassela, is particularly strong.'
23 March 2009 by Koen Schouten – Volkskrant

Jazz Saalfelden 2007
'The third highlight, as far as this writer is concerned, was the Saturday concert by Electric Barbarian. The young musicians from the USA, Brazil and Holland bring their own unclassifiable sound. An odd multitude of sounds, which combines language and noise with tones, made for an extraordinary experience on Saturday night.'
1 September 2007 by Carina Prange – Jazzdimensions (Berlin)

Juu Jääb FUTURE MUSIC FESTIVAL
Electric Barbarian made a layered musical journey
‘Drum´n´bass and jazz, or in other words, drums, bass and trumpet, are the main components of the group Electric Barbarian. Mix it all together and you get a very modern youthful musical project whose rhythm section sends shivers down the spine and whose trumpet carries you to the realm of dreams... The performance was made even more excellent by the imaginative mixes of DJ Grazzhoppa, the once European DMC Champion, making the music sound club-like...’
30 June 2006 by Eliis Vennik – Tallinn Estonia

Minirock from the Sun [Exco Music – EB0406]
'The Greek, and after them the Romans, called everyone a barbarian if they could not understand them, or if their culture was foreign to them. Electric Barbarian, however, can easily be understood, and they have found a line-up and a musical format that fits contemporary music culture to a Time.'
27 October 2008 by Micha Beckers - Jazzenzo

'It's the easy way out. You opt for a mixture of jazz and dance music (mainly drum 'n' bass and hiphop), and you do everything on auto pilot. Nice little sample here, bit of rap there, raunchy little sax, Miles-type trumpet – done. This is not how Floris Vermeulen likes to do things. Electric Barbarian's bass guitarist/composer/leader does not go for junkfood solutions on the CD Minirock from the Sun. He is a refined master chef, who is very picky in his ingredients.'
